Pop singer Majozi will be playing at The Republic of Mieliepop this weekend at Lothair. Perdeby spoke to the artist ahead of this exciting performance.
What is the most important thing you want your fans to know about you?
That I love Jesus, but I’m still like everyone else, with the same insecurities and worries. I just have a different way of dealing with it.
What would you say is the hardest thing that you’ve had to overcome, and how has it influenced your music?
Probably myself. I can be my own worst enemy sometimes. Self-doubt can be crippling, but it also forces you to search deep within yourself, which hopefully produces more intimacy in your songs. It’s a catch-22.
Your songs, “The river”, “Marvelous light”and “Darling”, seemed to skyrocket you towards fame and success. How did you handle the transition?
I wouldn’t say skyrocketed, but ja, it’s been great. In the grander scheme of things I don’t think I’m that famous. I’ve just been really fortunate enough to have awesome support from the radio stations and my fans. I’m a pretty chilled guy so I take whatever comes my way, as level-headed as I can.
You performed at Oppikoppi last year. What was that experience like for you?
I really loved it. It was my first time attending as well. The [number] of awesome bands you get to see in a few days is amazing, and everyone is really friendly.
What does it mean to you to be performing at Mieliepop?
I always get stoked to play at a festival I’ve never been to before, and it means the world to me that I still get to experience a new place and crowd and share my songs with people.
Have you been working on any new material recently?
I try write as often as I can. Even if I just released an album. It makes for good practice, so I never really stop.
What advice would you give to those who would like to pursue a career in music?
Be kind, be humble, and work hard
What does 2017 hold for you?
Hopefully a few overseas trips, and a new album towards the end of the year, but we will see.
